We recently read with amazement the newly set-up National Hydration Council's (NHC) website and in particular it's response to the environmental impacts of bottled water.  The NHC is an industry body set up by some of the world's largest bottlers - Danone, Nestle and Highland Spring. In an obvious attempt to counter the growing trends and awareness about the issues surrounding bottled water this is big business trying to spin themselves as advisory and fighting the cause of the consumer.

Some of the incredible facts they spout are:

"Free from man made chemicals"

"Bottle water companies have taken a lead on charitable actions"

"Many bottled water firms are rural-based, providing much needed jobs in these communities"

"Food miles: far less than you expect"

Essentially there is very little substance to their argument and in fact they are simply pushing that water is good for us and better than other drinks. This is true. However, what is much better, is water that is free, fresh and straight from the tap!
